With close but distinct ties to Hungarian culture, composers Joseph Haydn, Béla Bartók and György Ligeti all shaped our ears while sharing more common ground then one might think. Join us Thursday at 7 pm to hear host Nadia Sirota and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen trace these overlaps during last year's Magyar Magic, recorded live in The Greene Space.

Recorded on March 8, 2011, Q2 Music’s Magyar Magic served as a preview for the New York Philharmonic's 2011 "Hungarian Echoes" Festival. Curated and conducted by Salonen, the festival wove together the common threads of the three hugely influential composers, offering an excerpted musical history of Hungary and its folk traditions.

Featuring pianists Conor Hanick and Marino Formenti and members of the New York Philharmonic, Magyar Magic included performances of Ligeti's harpsichord music, Bartok's String Quartet No. 4, and Haydn's String Quartet in C Major, as well as music by Hungarian composer György Kurtág. Interwoven by Salonen and Sirota’s commentary, the performance offered an enlightening preview of the festival, culminating in a mash-up of the three composers’ work.

Stream this performance Thursday at 7 pm and Saturday at 10 am.
